True or false heart rate monitoring, Did you realise it?

Since 2016, smart health bracelets have become popular. Step number monitoring and calorie consumption have entered our vision. With the innovation and development of sensing and algorithm technology, smart watches have rapidly entered the health field, becoming healthy wear products.

Over the past few years, heart rate monitoring has gradually become accurate. It seems that heart rate monitoring is the "standard" function of many smart watches and fitness trackers. Through careful observation, you will find that many friends around you have started to use this kind of equipment, or for fitness or weight loss, record fitness data, and track fitness progress.

But is the heart rate monitoring on your watch true? Many users who do not understand smart watches will feel that they can monitor as long as the LED light on the back of the watch is emitted. However, in order to reduce manufacturing costs, some manufacturers have added fake heart rate monitoring functions.

Don't be greedy for low price, Healthy wear requires technical support

In order to reduce the manufacturing cost, instead of using photoelectric heart rate sensors, the trackers of these wearable devices use two green LED light circuit boards and only display one heart rate range of a normal person. Then they can be packaged with heart rate monitoring function and sold at a low price.

It is reported that there are a large number of cheap smart watches and fitness bracelets on Amazon, AliExpress and other platforms (which are understood by Chinese people who are hard to understand), and many products also have advanced functions, such as heart rate monitoring. But when I bought it, I found that some cheap exercise bracelets that claimed to support heart rate monitoring did not include heart rate sensors at all. Instead, some OEM manufacturers use a circuit board with two green LEDs to simulate the flicker of the photoelectric heart rate sensor to deceive users.

As everyone who has read my previous articles knows, most of the current heart rate monitoring methods of professional smart watches use the PPG Capacitive Pulse Wave Graph to detect the change of heart rate (if you don't understand it, you can turn it forward. Some OEM manufacturers will use green LED to measure heart rate, while some brands, such as Apple Watch, will also use infrared to measure heart rate, which supports ECG testing, but the monitoring frequency is low, usually every ten minutes. Heart rate monitoring has high requirements for sensors and algorithm technology. So think about the cost of smart watches you buy with single digits, excluding the cost of materials and chips. How much is the cost of technology.

If you really want to conduct health monitoring, don't try to be cheap. After all, health wear is not just about looking at the time on your hands and copying mobile phone functions, but mainly about monitoring technology.

Is heart rate monitoring by smart watch reliable?

At present, such brands and products specialized in intelligent wear as Apple Watch, Jiaming and Veepoo Watch are reliable. But in fact, no enterprise says that the monitoring accuracy of its own products can reach 100%. After all, it is not a hospital professional diagnosis and treatment instrument. Intelligent wear is only used for health monitoring, providing users with a data indicator to measure their health. Therefore, the reliability of intelligent wearable products depends on the monitoring accuracy (the higher the accuracy, the closer to the accurate value). Therefore, for professionals, whether heart rate monitoring is feasible mainly depends on its accuracy.

Taking Veepoo watch RIG as an example, RIG uses 7-channel Fresnel optical lens, 6 light-emitting LEDs and 3-electrode sensing, combined with a new algorithm, which makes the data more accurate. This watch can monitor the heart rate every five minutes. Through the team test, the heart rate monitoring accuracy of Watch RIG is high. Compared with the heart rate band of ECG, the difference in the accuracy of resting heart rate monitoring is ± 1 bpm, while the difference in the accuracy of exercise heart rate is ± 5%. So if you want to conduct health monitoring and do not have such a high budget, you might as well try Vepoo's products.
